Kate died, I believe, as a result of a horrific accident in the Northwest caused by the burning of fields. The burning caused smoke to envelope a highway upon which she and her family were traveling. There was an article in which I believe her father was interviewed. Extremely tragic. As I recall, Kate was not the only fatality.
Kate, her husband Bill (called Bert in the book), and young daughters Dayiel and Mia all died in the accident that Corinna describes. Her father, whose pen name is William Wharton, described the tragedy in his book Ever After (Newmarket Press, 1995). The book details her father's efforts to get the state of Oregon to ban the field-burning practice that led to the accident. The book's cover shows Kate's father holding her daughter Dayiel.

Here is the Wikipedia entry about Kate's father, who wrote under the name William Wharton. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wharton_(author)
Mrs DuAime, who was a teacher, was at the reunion in 2018, and looked exactly the same. She had and has a sweet face.
