Philip Martin Sittler was born in Berwyn, Illinois on 31 May 1952. He was a son of Helen Jeanne Seitz and Joseph Andrew Sittler III, a theologian in residence at the American Church for a time. Philip died 8 March 1995 in Chicago, aged 42. He was survived by his three brothers and two sisters, nieces and nephews
